There are also fellowship programs, which are simply residencies for doctors who want to become specialists. Fellowships are completed after a residency. For example, if you wanted to be a pediatric cardiologist, you would own to complete a 3 year residency in pediatrics, and afterwards a 3 year fellowship in pediatric cardiology. If you want to be a cardiothoracic surgeon, you would own to complete a 5-7 year residency in surgery, and afterwards a 2-3 year fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery.
