Becoming an optometrist. Am I wasting my time?

I am an undergraduate student (4th year senior). I want to become an optometrist. I want to be paid at most minuscule $80,000 a year.
I've read that the need for optometrists will be decreasing.
So will I be wasting my time and money going to an optometry institution to become an optometrist?
Should I choose another career?
LASIK is not an alternative for everyone, and children still will need specs before they are eligible to draw from LASIK. On top of that, I've had two exams to attain LASIK, and both were conducted by Optometrists. The surgery is still perform by Opthalmologists, but Optometrists can still do followups and exams.
Even if people do draw from LASIK, they still need regular eye exams, same beside people who own never had specs.
You aren't wasting your time, go for it.
I don't see how the want for optometrists can decrease when the babyboomers are simply now starting to enter their 60s. Go for it.
